Silverdale, WA - 30 Jun 2024
Sunny Saturday morning and I was off for an early walk. I wanted to visit the trails and see if the eviction notices held up. They did.
The trails were free of humans other than me. Some lingering garbage remained, but that seems to be getting cleared up as time goes by. Thank you to all the volunteers who work hard to keep the trail system intact. From what I understand there is a plan in place to connect all the trails in the county and ultimately create one long trail across the state to the west coast. I have to say I am looking forward to that day... if I live long enough to see it. But, I digress.
The trails have become overgrown since my last visit. I will attribute that to the alternating sunshine and rain. The canopy has become dense to the point where sky has turned to patches of blue speckling the green forest cover. Besides the new growth a lot of old growth remains and I hope some developer doesn't get their eye on this area. Some of the old trees are feet across. Relics of history I can't imagine what they must have seen over the centuries.
I explored some new trails that were cut out by the unhoused (is that the correct term nowadays?) who camped here for the past decade. Now there are little single tracks that creep deep in the woods. Given the right circumstances I could see this being a preferable way to live. Edible plant life, the occasional salmon (shhh, don't tell) and a multitude of rabbits could keep a body alive and well fed forever.
Things to do, places to go and people to see. I had to cut my visit short and return to civilization. Still, even in the brief visit I could feel a veil of calm and well being settle over me and it would keep me smiling for the rest of the day.
Get out and take your own walk in the woods. You'll thank me, I promise.
Keep on truckin'
